TOXIC WORKPLACES




We all once in a lifetime worked in a toxic workplace or worse still, currently working in a toxic workplace and that's why we left/are planning on quitting!....

So who is a toxic employee? Are you the toxic employee??


Lets see if this description of a toxic employee describes you,,,

 A toxic employee is a worker who is motivated by personal gains such as Power, money or special status..Uses unethical, mean-spirited and sometimes illegal means to manipulate and annoy those around them to divert attention away from their performance shortfalls and misdeeds.They do not recognize a duty to the organization which they work for or co-workers in-terms of ethics or professional code of conduct towards others.

A toxic employee/s often posses a particular technical skill that is seen as indispensable and thus a source of informal power in the workplace.The longer the type of technically skilled toxic employee works in an organization, the greater their influence grows. Co-workers and even supervisors watch these individuals intimidate others and control them by spreading rumors, silent treatment  and their marginalization techniques. Another effective tactic they use is to exploit their long service to emphasize their irreplacability .

Effects of toxic workers


Positively Motivated Co-workers get distracted by toxic employees drama, gossip and by choosing sides in the ongoing animosity. This can translate into lost of productivity . While employees are distracted by this activities, they cannot devote time and attention to the achievements of business goals.
Positively motivated and ethical employees may try to speak up to toxic employees but this can make them a target. So overtime, positively motivated employees drift away from their workplace leaving employees who can comfortably work in the negatively charged atmosphere.

  Time to leave...

Research carried out indicates that working in toxic workplaces can lead to serious and sometimes terminal illnesses as a result of stress and worry over whether they or someone they care about in the workplace may be targeted.

My Take

 In my own opinion, its every result oriented emoployer/supervisors obligation to make sure that workplaces are habitable for better results
